Today we will introduce another normal Standard for Carbon steel pipe: ASTM A 53. The Standard full name is: Standard Specification for Pipe, Steel, Black and Hot-Dipped, Zinc-Coated, Welded and Seamless. Let’s begin.
This specification covers seamless and welded black and hot-dipped galvanized steel pipe in NPS 1/8-NPS26(DN6-DN650). This specification covers three types:
Type F-Furnace-butt-welded, continuous welded Grade A,
Type E—Electric-resistance-welded, Grades A and B, and
Type S—Seamless, Grades A and B.
The pipe under this specification is intended for mechanical and pressure applications and is also acceptable for ordinary uses in steam, water, gas, and air lines.
- Material and Manufacture
The steel for both seamless and welded pipe shall be made by one or more of the following processes: open-hearth, electric-furnace, or basic-oxygen.
When pipe is cold expanded, the amount of expansion shall not exceed 1 1/2% of the specified outside diameter of the pipe.
- Chemical Composition & Mechanical Property
There have a table request the chemical composition of each grade, and the analysis shall be in accordance with test Methods, Practices, and Terminology A751.
There are only two steel Grade in this standard: GrA and GrB, the Specification write it clearly.
The specification rules the test should make:
- Bend Test: It’s suitable for pipe NPS2(DN50) or smaller, but the double-extra-strong pipe over NPS 11/4(DN32) need not be do this.
- Flattening Test: The test shall be made on welded pipe over PS2(DN50) in extra-strong weight or lighter. Though the seamless pipe not required, the pipe shall be capable of meeting the requirements of Supplementary Requirement S1.
- Hydrostatic Test: Each length of pipe shall be do the hydrostatic test except as request do the NDT test to instead this test for seamless pipe. The minimum pressure required to satisfy these requirements need not exceed 2500psi for NPS3(DN80), and under, not 2800psi for all sized over NPS 3(DN80). But it not forbid manufacturers testing a higher pressure. The test request not less than 5s for all size of seamless and ERW pipe.
- NDT Test:
For the welded pipe, the specification request the weld seam of each length of ERW pipe NPS2(DN50) and larger shall be tested with NDT test, to check the weld seam is qualified.
For the seamless pipe, if the customer required, the NDT test can be the option instead of hydrostatic test.
Usually the welded pipe will use UT test, the seamless pipe will use ECT test.
