UL Listed Pipe

UL Listed Pipe is for Safety Metallic Sprinkler Pipe for Fire Protection Service. It applies to metallic pipes used in water-based fire prevention systems for water distribution or valve trim applications. When erected in compliance with the following Standards, these UL listed pipes may be used in fire prevention systems:

  • NFPA 13 Standard for Sprinkler System Installation;
  • NFPA 13R, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in Residential Occupancies Up to Four Stories High;
  • NFPA 13D, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in One- and Two-Family Dwellings and Manufactured Homes;
  • NFPA 14 Installation Standard for Standpipe, Private Hydrants, and Hose Systems;
  • NFPA 15 Standard for Water Spray Fixed Systems;
  • NFPA 16 Installation Standard for Foam-Water Spray Systems; and
  • NFPA 750 Water Mist Fire Protection System Standard.

UL listed pipes are classified according to size, pressure rating, end configuration (threaded or unthreaded), and wall thickness. The Corrosion Resistance Ratio is another way to classify steel pipe (CRR).

Manufacturing Procedures of UL Listed Fire Sprinkler Pipe

After heating to 760℃, the weld seam of the UL listed ERW pipe is heat-treated; we carefully cool the steel to toughen it and minimize its brittleness. To assure the finest quality and long-lasting performance, our goods are submitted to the most stringent testing techniques available. 

The whole length of the UL standard steel pipe is hot-formed and heated during tube creation. Rollers bend the coiled steel into a cylindrical form when it reaches 1343℃, and the pressure and heat fuse the edges together. This technique has no flash formations, allowing for a continuous weld. It all adds up to a pipe that is exceptionally robust while remaining easily machinable. Our 1–4″ threaded pipes are a full-bodied annealed product. 

Specifications of UL Listed Fire Sprinkler Pipe

  • Sizes: UL listed pipes must be nominal 1/2-inch NPS or bigger in size. NPS (NOMINAL PIPE SIZE) – A dimensionless designator for pipe sizes established in standards such as ASTM A53, ASTM A135, and ASTM A795 that is used to replace terminology like “Nominal Diameter” and “Nominal Size.”
  • Ends: Where steel pipe is intended to be threaded, threads must conform to ANSI / ASME B1.20.1, Standard for Pipe Threads, General Purpose (inch).
  • Pressure: The pipe must be built to a minimum rated pressure of 175 psi (1206 MPa).
  • Steel Grades: The pipe must meet the dimensional, chemical, and physical qualities specified in the appropriate ASTM Standards or other nationally or globally recognized pipe standards.

Test and Inspection on UL Listed Fire Sprinkler Pipe

  • Chemical Analysis – Number of tests: 2 pieces each batch of 500 or 2 pieces per heat. (If either pipe fails, an additional two pieces from the same batch must be examined.)
  • Tensile Test – The tensile test is used to determine the mechanical characteristics of the pipe. In the case of welded pipe, the weld strength must not be less than the strength of the pipe body.
  • Bending Test – A bending test is done on pipe dimensions NPS 2 and smaller to assess the ductility of the pipe. Depending on the scenario, the bend test might be 90 degrees or 180 degrees.
  • Flattening Test – Pipe diameters larger than NPS 2 are flattening tested for ductility. As specified by ASTM A53, a pipe sample is sliced and flattened between two flat surfaces using a cutting blade.
  • Hydrostatic Test – This is a test that is carried out on each length of the pipe to identify whether or not there is a leak in the pipe. It is necessary to keep the pressure up for at least 5 seconds.
  • Weld Seam Ultrasonic or Electromagnetic Test – This non-destructive test is done throughout the whole length of the weld to ensure that the weld is structurally sound and secure.
