AS 1163 C250
AS 1163 C250
AS/NZ 1163 C250 hollow sections are constructed in accordance with the Australian standard for cold-formed structural steel hollow sections with specified tensile test requirements. Unlike grade C250 L0, grade C250 does not require a Charpy v-notch impact test.
AS1163 C250 is an Australian standard that specifies the steel grade for cold-formed structural steel hollow sections. The steel’s nominal minimum yield strength (C250) is used to determine the grade classification (C250) (in MPa). The prefix ‘C’ is used before the value of the nominal yield strength of the steel to indicate that the section is cold-formed. Only cold-formed structural steel hollow sections are covered by AS 1163.

NOTE: These restrictions only apply to the side of the tensile test that is being performed. That is, whether the test specimen is sliced from the b/t or d/t face determines whether the RHS ratio is b/t or d/t. There is only one ratio for SHS (as b = d).
Shape and Weight Tolerances of AS 1163 C250 L0 Pipes
Characteristic | Circular Hollow Sections | Square and Rectangular Hollow Sections |
External dimensions (do, d and b) | ±1%, with a minimum of ±0.5 mm and a maximum of ±10 mm | ±1%, with minimum of ±0.5 mm |
Thickness (t) | For do £ 406.4 mm: ±10% For do > 406.4 mm: ±10% with a max of ±2 mm | ±10% |
Out-of-roundness (o) | ±2% for hollow sections having a diameter to thickness ratio not exceeding 100 (Check Note 1) | — |
Concavity/convexity (Check Note 2) | — | Max. 0.8% or 0.5 mm, whichever is greater |
Squareness of sides | — | 90°±1° |
External corner profile | — | Check Table 5 |
Twist (v) | — | 2 mm + 0.5 mm/m length |
Straightness (Check Note 3) | 0.20% of total length | 0.15% of total length |
Mass (m) per unit length | Not less than 0.96 times the specified mass (Note 4) on individual lengths |
NOTES:
- When the diameter to thickness ratio reaches 100, the manufacturer and the customer must agree on tolerance for out-of-roundness.
- Convexity and concavity tolerances are unaffected by external dimension tolerances.
- The straightness tolerance covers straightness in any one plane.
- In the absence of any other requirement, the provided mass is assumed to be the nominal mass.
Length Tolerances of AS 1163 C250 Pipes
Type of length | Range mm | Tolerance |
Random length | 4000 to 16000 with a range of 2000 per order item | 10% of the sections delivered may be less than the minimum for the ordered range, but not less than 75% of the minimum |
Mill length (or “unspecified”) | All | +100 mm –0mm |
Precision length | <6000 | +5 mm –0mm |
6000 ~ 10000 | +15 mm –0mm | |
>10000 | +5 mm, + 1 mm/m –0mm |
NOTE: The type of length needed, as well as the length or length range, must be included in the inquiry and order. Alternatively, length tolerances must be specified at the time of ordering.
AS1163 C250 AND API 5L Gr. B Dual Specs Pipes
There is a high demand for dual-spec pipes, such as AS1163 C250 / API 5L Gr. B materials. To demonstrate conformity with these materials requirements, we conduct a number of mechanical/chemical tests. To ensure compliance with tensile and fracture toughness requirements, API 5L and AS/NZS 1163 each need separate test methodologies. To establish structural and pressure integrity, hydrostatic pressure tests and non-destructive weld inspection are also done.
