Weldability of EN 10219 S235JRH Pipe
This European standard specifies weldable steel. EN 1011-1 and EN 1011-2 provide the essential specifications for welding items covered by this European standard.
The greatest concern while welding these materials is the development of cold cracking in the welded zone as the thickness, strength level, and CEV of the product increase. Cold cracking occurs as a result of the following factors:
- Enhanced diffusible hydrogen concentrations in the weld metal;
- Brittle structure in the heat-affected zone;
- High tensile stress concentrations in the welded joint
Chemical composition of S235JRH for product thicknesses ≤ 40 mm (Heat analysis in %)
Steel Grade | Material Number | Type of Deoxidation1) | C | Si | Mn | P | S | N2) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
S235JRH | 1.0039 | FF | ≤ 0,17 | – | ≤ 1,40 | ≤ 0,040 | ≤ 0,040 | ≤ 0,009 |
FF = Fully killed steel containing nitrogen binding elements in amounts sufficient to bind available nitrogen (e. g. min. 0,020 % total Al or 0,015 % soluble Al). | ||||||||
The maximum value for nitrogen does not apply if the chemical composition shows a minimum total Al content of 0,020 % with a minimum Al/N ratio of 2:1, or if sufficient other N-binding elements are present. The N-binding elements shall be recorded in the Inspection Document. |

The impact test has to be proved only if option 1.3 is determined. For wall thicknesses > 3 mm and section sizes D/T < 15 (circular) and (B+H)/2T x 12,5 (square or rectangular) the minimum elongation is reduced by 2. For wall thicknesses £ 3 mm the minimum value for elongation is 17 %. For section sizes D/T < 15 (circular) and (B+H)/2T x 12,5 (square or rectangular) the minimum elongations are reduces by 2. For wall thickness below 3 mm see DIN EN 10219-1, 9.2.2. For impact tests with test pieces with reduced cross-section see DIN EN 10219-1, 6.7.2. |
